What does Kindle ebook formatting look like before and after?
Before Kindle ebook formatting, your book is a Word or Google Doc. After, it is an EPUB with a linked table of contents that reflows at any font size. We check it in Kindle Previewer and send the screenshots. It costs $99 for up to 80,000 words, in 7 business days.
Drag to compare. Both rendered in epub.js at the same screen size. Public-domain text, formatted by us.
What is Kindle ebook formatting?
Ebook formatting turns a Word or Google Doc into an EPUB file that reflows on a Kindle, a phone or a tablet. The text has no fixed pages. Each reader picks the font size, so the book has to stay readable at every size. That is why the paperback needs its own file.
What do we check before we send it?
We check every EPUB in Kindle Previewer, the free checker Amazon provides, as a Kindle, a phone and a tablet would show it. Anything that shows wrong, we fix before you get the file. The screenshots come with it, so you see what we saw before you upload anything.
What did our sample ebook change?
Our sample ebook changed three things: text size, spacing and headings. It sets no text size of its own, so the reader's size setting stays in charge. Lines sit at 1.4 line height with 0.4 em side margins. Chapter headings are styled as headings, which makes the table of contents links work.
What happens if KDP rejects it?
If KDP rejects your ebook for a formatting reason, we fix it free until KDP accepts it, as long as you tell us within 60 days of delivery. That covers table of contents links, embedded fonts and file type. Text changes you make after you approve the file are not covered.
The KDP rule behind it: Format Your eBook, on KDP's help pages (read 11 October 2026).
How does an ebook get from Word to Kindle?
It takes six steps and 7 business days for up to 80,000 words. You send the final manuscript, and we hand back an EPUB with the Previewer screenshots and our upload guide. The only other step that is yours is the upload, done without sharing your KDP login.
Send your final manuscript as a Word, PDF, RTF, ODT or plain text file.
We style every chapter heading so the table of contents can link to it.
We build the EPUB with a linked table of contents.
We open it in Kindle Previewer and fix anything that shows wrong.
You get the EPUB, the Previewer screenshots and our upload guide.
You upload it to your own KDP account. We never need your login.
Should you use a free converter or pay for ebook formatting?
Use the free converter first if your book is plain text. KDP accepts an EPUB made with any third-party tool, as long as it meets the Kindle Publishing Guidelines, and it tells you to check the file in Kindle Previewer before you upload.
So open the converter's EPUB in Kindle Previewer and look at three things.
Do the table of contents links jump to the right chapters?
Does the text change size when you change the reader's font setting?
Do the chapter titles start on a new screen?
If all three work, keep the free file. If one fails, the converter could not read your styles, and the fix starts in the manuscript, not in the EPUB.
That is when we rebuild the file from your final manuscript. Our EPUB sets no text size of its own, so the reader's setting stays in charge. Lines sit at 1.4 line height with 0.4 em side margins, and every chapter title is styled as a heading, which is what makes the contents links work.
It costs $99 for up to 80,000 words and takes 7 business days. You get the Kindle Previewer screenshots with the file, and we fix it free if KDP rejects it for a formatting reason within 60 days of delivery.
A book built on photos, charts or workbook pages is different. A person quotes those after seeing the pages.

Is there a cheaper option?
Yes. Some studios post ebook prices from $30, and Kindle Create is free. Ours costs $99 because the price includes the Kindle Previewer check, the screenshots and the fix until accepted guarantee. If you only need a file converted, a cheaper service may suit you better.
Who is this not for?
It is not for fixed-layout ebooks, picture books, cookbooks or books full of tables or photos. Those need a different build from the reflowing EPUB we make for $99, so a person looks at each one and sends a quote instead of the posted price.
Do you need a proofread first?
If your manuscript still has typos, get the proofread first. We proofread for $16 per 1,000 words, in 5 business days per 50,000 words, before formatting starts, so your pages are set once. A proofread catches spelling, punctuation and typos. It doesn't rewrite your sentences.
We do it before formatting on purpose. Every fix after the pages are set can move a line, and a moved line can move a page end.
A 70,000-word novel costs $1,120 to proofread. The proofread runs first, and its days come before the formatting days.
If you want grammar, consistency and clarity checked too, a copyedit is $24 per 1,000 words and includes the proofread.
| Service | Price | Business days |
|---|---|---|
| Proofread (spelling, punctuation, typos) | $16 per 1,000 words | 5 per 50,000 words |
| Copyedit (grammar, consistency, clarity; includes proofread) | $24 per 1,000 words | 10 per 50,000 words |
What else do authors ask?
What is the average price for proofreading 1,000 words?
Clean Page Press charges $16 per 1,000 words, so a 70,000-word book is $1,120. Proofreading takes 5 business days per 50,000 words and is done before formatting.
How much does ebook formatting cost?
Clean Page Press formats a Kindle ebook for $99, up to 80,000 words, in 7 business days, with a Kindle Previewer check and the fix-until-accepted guarantee.
How do I know you're any good?
Ask for the free sample: we format up to 1,300 words of your own manuscript, back in 2 business days, before you pay. Every ebook comes with the Kindle Previewer screenshots we checked, and we fix it free if KDP rejects it for a formatting reason.
What file format does KDP want for an ebook?
KDP accepts EPUB for ebooks, along with Word files and Kindle Create files. We deliver an EPUB with a linked table of contents.
Can I use the same file for my ebook and my paperback?
No, the ebook and the paperback need two different files. The ebook is an EPUB that reflows, and the paperback is a PDF with fixed pages at your trim size. Starter makes both for $249.
How can I check my ebook before I publish?
Open it in Kindle Previewer, which Amazon gives away free. We do that for you and send the screenshots with the file.
Do I keep the rights to my ebook?
Yes, you keep 100% of the rights, the royalties and the files we make.
Will an EPUB from a free converter pass KDP?
It can. KDP accepts an EPUB from any third-party tool if it meets the Kindle Publishing Guidelines. Check it in Kindle Previewer, which Amazon gives away free, before you upload.
Can I still upload a MOBI file?
Not for a fixed-layout ebook. KDP stopped accepting MOBI files for fixed-layout ebooks in March 2025. EPUB is the safe choice for any new upload.
Can I sell my ebook outside Amazon while it is in KDP Select?
No, not during the 90-day term. KDP Select needs the Kindle ebook to stay exclusive for each term, though you may show up to 10% of it elsewhere as a sample. Your paperback and hardcover are not affected.
What if my book is mostly photos or charts?
Send us a few pages first. Image-heavy layouts are quoted by a person, because the price depends on how many images there are and how they sit on the page.
