What changes from paperback to hardcover?
The words stay the same, but the hardcover gets its own interior PDF. KDP prints hardcovers as a separate format, in five trim sizes from 5.5 x 8.5 in to 8.25 x 11 in, for 75 to 550 pages. We check your trim size and inside margin against those rules and reset them.
How does KDP compare with IngramSpark for a hardcover?

Why does the gutter change?
The gutter, or inside margin, depends on page count. When a page count crosses one of KDP's bands, the gutter has to grow, or text runs into the binding. A margin change can also move lines, so after resetting it we recheck every page end before we export the PDF.
