Short answer. The developmental edit cost at Clean Page Press is $35 per 1,000 words, with a $299 minimum. A 70,000-word novel comes to $2,450 and takes 15 business days. You get a written report on structure, pacing, plot or argument and character, plus notes in the margins of your manuscript.
Key points
- How much does a developmental edit cost? $35 per 1,000 words here, $299 minimum.
- The price is your word count times the rate, written down before you pay.
- 15 business days up to 80,000 words, plus 3 for every started 20,000 words over.
- A developmental edit looks at the whole book. It does not fix commas.
- If you are not sure the book needs one, a manuscript assessment costs $12 per 1,000 words.
How much does a developmental edit cost per 1,000 words?
A developmental edit costs $35 per 1,000 words at Clean Page Press, with a $299 minimum. Take your word count, divide by 1,000 and multiply by $35. If the answer is under $299, you pay $299. We publish one rate for fiction and non-fiction, and the price goes on the quote before you pay.
That minimum only bites on short work. At $35 per 1,000 words, the math crosses $299 at about 8,550 words. An 8,000-word story would come to $280 on the rate alone, so it is billed at the $299 minimum. Anything longer is billed on the rate.
What would my book cost?
The cost of your book is its word count times $35 per 1,000 words, with a $299 minimum for short work. A 70,000-word novel comes to $2,450 in 15 business days. Here are the numbers for common lengths, using the rate and the turnaround on our book editing page:
| Word count | Developmental edit | Business days |
|---|---|---|
| 8,000 | $299 (minimum) | 15 |
| 50,000 | $1,750 | 15 |
| 70,000 | $2,450 | 15 |
| 80,000 | $2,800 | 15 |
| 90,000 | $3,150 | 18 |
The 70,000-word row is the worked example on that page, because it is a common novel length. When we checked those figures against the page on 13 October 2026, the same novel came to $840 for an assessment and $2,100 for a line edit. That $1,610 gap between an assessment and a developmental edit is why we suggest the assessment first to authors who are unsure.
The 90,000-word book gets 3 extra days because it starts a new block of 20,000 words over 80,000.
What do you get for the money?
A developmental edit gets you two things: a written report and margin notes. The report covers structure, plot or argument, pacing and character. The margin notes sit in your own manuscript, next to the scenes or passages they are about. What you do not get is a rewrite.
The report says what works, what does not, and why. For a novel that might be a sagging middle act or a subplot that never pays off. For non-fiction it is more often the order of the argument, or chapters that repeat each other.
You can see exactly which page made the editor stop.
A developmental edit works on the words you have already written. It tells you what to change; you make the changes.
How is this different from a line edit or a copyedit?
A developmental edit works at a different depth from a line edit or a copyedit, and the price follows. Most books that need structural work should get the developmental edit first. Polishing sentences in a chapter you later cut is money spent twice.
A developmental edit looks at the whole book. A line edit, at $30 per 1,000 words with a $149 minimum, works sentence by sentence on rhythm, clarity and word choice, as tracked changes in your Word file. A copyedit, at $24 per 1,000 words, covers grammar and consistency and includes a proofread. A proofread alone is $16 per 1,000 words.
If the only problems left are spelling and punctuation, you do not need a developmental edit at all. You need a proofread.
How do I know if my book needs one?
Your book probably needs a developmental edit if beta readers stall at the same point, or if you keep moving chapters around and nothing settles. Those are structure problems, and no amount of sentence work fixes them. You probably do not need one if readers finish the book and their notes are about typos and word choice.
If you cannot tell, that is the case for a manuscript assessment. It costs $12 per 1,000 words, with a $199 minimum, and takes 7 business days for a book up to 80,000 words. You get a report of 8 to 12 pages on what works and what does not, with no edits in the text. For a 70,000-word book that is $840 instead of $2,450, and it tells you whether the bigger spend is worth it.
The fix we do for this: if you are unsure which edit your book needs, tell us your word count and the problem you keep hitting. We reply with the edit we would pick, the price and the dates.
How does this compare with other editors?
Our $35 per 1,000 words sits inside the range we found in other editors' posted prices, but rates vary a lot. Compare per 1,000 words, not per project. Ask any editor what the price covers, because some quote a report only, with no margin notes, and some charge extra for a follow-up call.
When we read their posted prices on 13 October 2026, Reedsy's 2026 cost guide put developmental editing at $0.026 to $0.053 a word, which is $26 to $53 per 1,000 words. Damonza listed developmental editing of fiction from $0.034 a word, or $34 per 1,000, and from $0.04 for non-fiction.
A lower rate that leaves out the notes can cost you more time.
Should I edit before I format the book?
Edit your book before you format it, and do it in that order every time. Every change after the pages are set can move a line, and a moved line can move a page end. A structural edit almost always moves pages. If you format first, you pay for the layout twice.
When you order editing and formatting from us together, the editing days come first. The formatting days start when you approve the edited file. Formatting for ebook and paperback is $249 for up to 80,000 words. If you are pricing the whole book, our post on what book formatting costs for KDP in 2026 covers that side.
What happens after I order?
You send the manuscript and your word count by message. We tell you which edit we would pick and why, with the price and the dates. You pay by payment link. When the edit is done, you get the report and the margin notes in your own file.
The book stays yours. You keep every right and every file.
What else do authors ask about developmental edit costs?
At Clean Page Press it is $35 per 1,000 words, which is 3.5 cents a word, with a $299 minimum.
15 business days for a book up to 80,000 words, plus 3 business days for every started 20,000 words over that.
Not quite. Our manuscript assessment is a report only, with no notes in the text, for $12 per 1,000 words. The developmental edit adds margin notes throughout the manuscript and a deeper report.
No. A developmental edit tells you what to change and why. The rewriting is yours.
If the argument is out of order or chapters overlap, yes. If the structure holds and only the sentences need work, a line edit fits better.
What should you do next?
The next step is to send your word count and one line on what feels wrong with the draft. We reply with the edit we would pick, the price and the dates. If you are not sure which edit you need, say so: ask about your manuscript.
