How much does book formatting cost for KDP in 2026?

Our Pride and Prejudice sample paperback, 6 x 9 inches, standing on a dark background.

Short answer. How much does book formatting cost for KDP? Nothing with free tools, about $150 to $250 once for software, or several hundred dollars and up for a professional. Ours is $249 for ebook and paperback up to 80,000 words. The right route depends on your book. A plain novel is a very different job from a cookbook with 200 photos.

We sell KDP formatting, so we have an interest here. To keep this fair, every number below comes from the provider's own page or a published guide, with the date we checked it. How much does book formatting cost at each level?

Book formatting costs nothing with free tools, about $150 to $250 once for software, or several hundred dollars and up for a professional. Ours is $249 for ebook and paperback up to 80,000 words. There are four ways to get a book formatted, and the right route depends on your book.

Here they are from cheapest to dearest.

1. Free tools

  • KDP's own Word templates. KDP offers free Microsoft Word templates for paperbacks, either blank (page size and margins already set) or with sample content such as a formatted title page and table of contents. You customise the template yourself and delete the parts you do not need. Source: Paperback and Hardcover Manuscript Templates. Our step-by-step guide to formatting a book for KDP in Word covers that route.
  • Reedsy Studio. Reedsy says every function you need to write and format a book in Studio "is free, and always will be". It exports a reflowable EPUB 3 and a print-ready PDF. Print trim sizes are limited to four: 6 x 9, 5.5 x 8.5, 5 x 8 and 4.25 x 6.87 inches. Source: Reedsy Studio.
  • Kindle Create. KDP's own tool makes an ebook and a paperback from one manuscript. A third-party roundup lists it as free (Kindlepreneur, updated September 21, 2026). KDP's help page names limits you should know before you rely on it: it does not support paperbacks with tables, footnotes or endnotes, or paperback images that bleed to the edge, and you cannot customise margins or change the paperback font. The cost is your time and the risk of a rejected file.

2. Formatting software, one-time price

Tool Price Platforms Source
Atticus $147, one-time payment, with a 30-day money-back guarantee Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook atticus.io
Vellum Ebooks $199.99, ebooks only Mac only vellum.pub
Vellum Press $249.99, ebooks and paperbacks Mac only vellum.pub

Vellum's page lists prices without tax and requires macOS 13 or newer. The Vellum installer is free to download, and you can build and preview your book before you buy. Both are unlimited-books prices, which makes them good value if you will publish more than one title. We compare them in Atticus vs Vellum vs hiring a formatter for KDP.

3. Freelancers and marketplaces

Prices here depend on the person and the book. Reedsy's guide to self-publishing costs, last updated August 13, 2026, says book interior design averages $800, and that around half of interior design projects on Reedsy cost between $475 and $1,275. The same guide says typesetting can usually be done for free, and that you should pay a professional when your book needs heavy specialist formatting, such as a cookbook or a book with many pictures and graphs. Source: Reedsy: How much does it cost to publish a book?.

Reedsy's figure is higher than some roundups. Kindlepreneur's list of formatting services (updated May 2026) gives lower starting prices for other providers, for example from $219 for print up to 50,000 words at Ebook Launch, from $329 at Elite Authors and from $399 at BookBaby. Those are starting prices for specific packages, not the same job as a custom interior from a marketplace designer. Kindlepreneur's author also co-founded Atticus, which the site discloses. A seller's guide from publishing.co.uk puts UK freelancers at £40 to £400 and agencies at £296 and up, and Fiverr gigs from about $10 to $500 and more. That site sells formatting itself, so treat its ranges as a seller's view. Source: Book Formatting Cost UK.

4. Fixed-price done-for-you services

This is where we sit. A fixed price per book removes the quote-and-negotiate step, and a good service tells you what is included: ebook and paperback, number of revision rounds, a check in Kindle Previewer and against KDP's print specs, and what happens if KDP rejects the file.

Ours is $249 for ebook and paperback, up to 80,000 words, delivered in 10 business days. If KDP rejects our files for a formatting reason within 60 days of delivery, we fix them free until they are accepted. Ebook only is $99, and paperback only is $169. The full list is on our book formatting prices page, and you can ask for a free sample before you pay anything.

What changes the price?

The price changes with the format, the length, the images, tables and footnotes, the revisions and the turnaround. Print has more rules than an ebook. Many services price by word count. Reedsy says specialist layouts cost more, so photo books, cookbooks, workbooks and textbooks are the expensive end. Rush work usually costs extra.

  • Ebook, paperback, or both. Print has more rules than an ebook: trim size, margins that depend on page count, bleed and embedded fonts.
  • Length. Many services price by word count. One roundup lists a package for print up to 50,000 words. Per-page quotes are harder to compare, because formatting changes the page count. When we set a 6 x 9 sample chapter from The Great Gatsby on October 10, 2026, it went from 12 pages in Word to 14.
  • Images, tables and footnotes. Reedsy says specialist layouts cost more, and KDP's Kindle Create does not support paperbacks with tables, footnotes or endnotes. Photo books, cookbooks, workbooks and textbooks are the expensive end.
  • Revisions and rejections. Ask how many rounds are included, and whether the service fixes the file if KDP rejects it.
  • Turnaround. Rush work usually costs extra.

What is usually not in the price?

Editing and proofreading, the cover, changes after approval and a printed proof copy are not in any quote we have seen, so add them to your own budget. The cover is a separate file with its own specs, and we build the full cover wrap once your page count is final. A new chapter changes your page count, which can change the gutter, and KDP recommends ordering a proof.

  • Editing and proofreading. Formatting keeps every typo, so edit first.
  • The cover. It is a separate file with its own specs.
  • Changes after approval. A new chapter changes your page count, which can change the gutter.
  • A printed proof copy. KDP recommends ordering one.
  • An author website, if you want one for the book. Our post on one-page or five-page author websites helps you pick the size.
  • The Amazon listing text, which we write separately.

So which should you pick?

The right route depends on your book. For a plain novel or memoir on a tight budget, the free tools or a one-time software purchase are reasonable. If you will publish several books, Atticus or Vellum pays back quickly. With images, tables or footnotes, budget for a professional, and compare a fixed-price service on total cost.

  • A plain novel or memoir, one book, tight budget. The free tools or a one-time software purchase are reasonable, if you have the time and patience to check margins, fonts and the Previewer.
  • You will publish several books. A one-time tool such as Atticus or Vellum pays back quickly, and you keep control.
  • Images, tables, footnotes or a complex layout. Budget for a professional. KDP's free tool will not do it.
  • You want it done and guaranteed. A fixed-price service that fixes rejected files free until they are accepted is worth comparing on total cost, not only the sticker price.

What else do authors ask?

Can I format a book for free?

Yes, with KDP's templates, Reedsy Studio or Kindle Create, within the limits above.

Is formatting the same as editing?

No. Editing fixes the words. Formatting fixes how they sit on the page.

Does KDP format my book?

No. KDP provides templates, tools and the Print Previewer, and expects you to fix the file.
