Short answer. Is a KDP hardcover worth it? It is when your book already has a paperback at a hardcover trim, runs 75 to 550 pages, and can carry a higher price. A 300-page 6 x 9 hardcover costs $9.25 to print and earns $5.74 a copy at $24.99. Skip it if you need standard color or bookstore distribution.
Key points
- A hardcover costs $4.65 more to print than the same 300-page paperback at 6 x 9.
- At $24.99 the hardcover earns more per copy than a $14.99 paperback: $5.74 against $4.39.
- KDP hardcovers do not go into Expanded Distribution, so bookstores and libraries will not order them through KDP.
- The setup cost is a new ISBN, a new cover and a hardcover interior. Our hardcover interior from your paperback is $59.
What does a KDP hardcover cost to make?
Three parts. The interior file at a hardcover trim, a hardcover cover file, and an ISBN. KDP gives a free ISBN, and each edition needs its own, so the paperback's cannot be reused.
If your paperback is already 6 x 9 or 5.5 x 8.5 and between 75 and 550 pages, KDP lets you upload the same interior measurements for both, with the ISBN line changed. If your paperback is 5 x 8, the interior has to be reset, because 5 x 8 is paperback only.
The cover is always new. The hardcover wrap is 0.51 inch and has a 0.4 inch hinge. Our post on the KDP hardcover cover template covers the numbers.
How much does each hardcover earn?
KDP pays 60% of the list price minus the print cost on Amazon.com hardcovers listed at $9.99 or more. For a 300-page 6 x 9 book in black ink, worked out from KDP's tables on 13 October 2026:
| Edition | Print cost | List price | Royalty a copy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paperback | $4.60 | $14.99 | $4.39 |
| Hardcover | $9.25 | $19.99 | $2.74 |
| Hardcover | $9.25 | $24.99 | $5.74 |
At $19.99 the hardcover earns less per copy than the paperback. It only wins on royalty from about $22.74, roughly $7.75 above the paperback's price.
How many copies pay back the setup?
At $24.99, our $59 interior is covered by 11 hardcover sales: 10 copies at $5.74 is $57.40, so the eleventh covers the rest. A cover and any proof copies add to that, and they are on you.
If the paperback interior already fits both formats, the interior cost is close to zero. Then the hardcover is mostly a cover job.
Is a KDP hardcover worth it for every book?
No. Four kinds of book should skip it:
- Under 75 pages or over 550. KDP will not print them as hardcover.
- Standard color interiors. Hardcover offers premium color only, at $0.065 a page, so a 300-page color hardcover costs $25.15 to print.
- Books that need bookstores. KDP hardcovers are not in Expanded Distribution.
- Books sold mainly in Japan. Hardcover is not available on Amazon.co.jp.
The fix we do for this: when the hardcover makes sense, we build its interior from your paperback file at a valid trim, reset the gutter, and recheck every page end, for $59 in 3 business days with a paperback order. Ask for a free sample.
What does a reader get for the extra money?
A case laminate book. KDP prints the cover art onto the case, wraps it round 2 millimeter board and finishes it gloss or matte. Books over 120 pages get a black and white headband at the top and bottom of the spine. KDP's Hardcover help page says dust jackets and cloth binding aren't available.
Picture that next to a trade hardcover in a shop before you decide on price. It is a sturdy book, not a jacketed one.
Where can I sell it?
Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, the German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Irish and Belgian stores, Amazon.pl and Amazon.se. Amazon.ca and Amazon.com.au carry it when it is on Amazon.com. Our KDP hardcover requirements post lists the rest of the rules.
What else do authors ask about whether a KDP hardcover is worth it?
Yes. Each edition needs its own.
Yes. KDP offers proof and author copies.
Not under 75 pages. KDP will not print it.
$6.80 on Amazon.com, for 75 to 108 pages in black ink at a regular trim.
KDP publishes no figures on how one format affects another's sales. To test it for your book, compare your paperback sales in KDP Reports for the weeks before and after the hardcover goes live.
