KDP cream vs white paper: which one your paperback should use

Sample: Both samples, spines at real width. Public-domain text, formatted by us.

Short answer. KDP cream vs white paper: the print cost is the same. Cream is thicker, so it gives a wider spine and a lower page limit, 776 pages against 828 at 6 x 9. Most novels and memoirs use cream. Pick white for charts or photos, and for any color book, since color prints on white only.

Key points

  • Cream and white share one price chart on KDP. Paper does not change what you pay.
  • Cream adds about 11% to the spine width at the same page count.
  • Color ink is only offered on white paper.
  • For black ink books you can switch paper after publishing, but you may need a new cover.

Is cream or white paper cheaper on KDP?

Neither. KDP's printing cost table lists black ink "with cream or white paper" as one line: on Amazon.com, $2.30 up to 110 pages at a regular trim, then $1.00 plus $0.012 a page. Groundwood, a third option, is about 5% cheaper per page. Our post on KDP paperback print cost by page count has the full numbers.

How does the paper change the spine?

KDP sizes the spine as page count times a per-page thickness: 0.0025 inch for cream, 0.002252 inch for white. On a 210-page book, cream gives a spine of 0.525 inch and white gives 0.473 inch.

Spine width of a 210-page KDP paperback: 0.525 inch on cream paper against 0.473 inch on white

That gap matters for the cover. A cover built for one paper will not fit the other. Our post on KDP paperback cover size shows where the spine width goes in the full wrap.

Does the paper change the page limit?

Yes. At 6 x 9 and the other common sizes, cream tops out at 776 pages and white at 828. At 8.5 x 11 it is 550 against 590. Only very long books run into this. Our post on the KDP paperback minimum page count has the full table.

KDP cream vs white paper: which suits which book?

Cream for novels, memoir and most narrative books. It is softer on the eye over long reading and looks like a trade paperback. White for technical books and anything with black and white photos or charts, where contrast helps. That pairing is the usual practice in print, and our judgement, not a KDP rule.

Color is decided for you. KDP offers premium and standard color ink on white paper only.

Can you switch paper after publishing?

For black ink books, yes. KDP allows cream to white, cream to groundwood and white to groundwood, and back. Check your cover in the previewer first, because the new spine width may mean a new cover wrap. KDP says the change can take up to 72 hours to show. Color books cannot switch paper.

What did our own numbers show?

The spine changes more than most authors expect. At our measured 379 words a page, an 80,000-word novel is about 210 pages, and moving it from white to cream widens the spine by 0.052 inch. That is small, but a centered spine title shifts, and a cover sized for white may be rejected.
