Is KDP Select worth it for a first book? What 90 days of exclusivity buys

Chapter One of Pride and Prejudice as our EPUB on an e-reader: a styled chapter opening and text that reflows to the screen.

Short answer. Is KDP Select worth it? Often, for a first ebook with no readers on other stores yet. It is free and puts the ebook in Kindle Unlimited for 90 days, paid by pages read. The cost is that the ebook can be sold nowhere else for those 90 days. Your paperback is not affected.

Key points

  • KDP Select is free and covers the Kindle ebook only.
  • For 90 days the ebook can only be distributed through KDP and public libraries.
  • Print, audio and other formats can still be sold anywhere.
  • Enrollment renews every 90 days unless you untick automatic renewal.
  • You get up to 5 free days per term, or a Kindle Countdown Deal in the US and UK.
  • Our KDP upload and listing prep service writes the listing your ebook goes live with, whichever way you choose.

What do you get from KDP Select?

Four things, by KDP's own list:

  • Kindle Unlimited. Subscribers can read the ebook as part of their plan, and you earn a share of the monthly KDP Select Global Fund for pages they read the first time.
  • Free Book Promotions. Up to 5 days free in each 90 day term.
  • Kindle Countdown Deals. Time limited discounts on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk only.
  • Higher royalty in some stores. KDP's cancel page says that if you leave, royalties on sales in Brazil, Japan, India and Mexico go back to 35%.

KDP's site showed total KDP Select author earnings for August 2026 of $69.4 million when we read it on 13 October 2026. That is the whole pool, shared by pages read, not a forecast for any one book.

What does the 90 day exclusivity cost you?

Every other ebook store. KDP's enrollment page says the ebook must be exclusive to the Kindle Store for the term. That rules out selling it on Apple Books, Kobo or your own site for those 90 days.

You may show up to 10% of the book elsewhere as a sample. You can keep selling the paperback, hardcover and audiobook anywhere.

Exclusivity runs for the whole term. Unpublishing pauses the term rather than ending it, and it resumes when you republish.

Is KDP Select worth it for a first book?

Usually yes, if the ebook has no readers anywhere else yet. That is our judgement, not a KDP rule. A first book rarely has a following on Kobo or Apple Books to give up, and Kindle Unlimited readers can try an unknown author at no extra cost to them.

It is less clear in three cases:

  • You already sell ebooks well on other stores.
  • You want the ebook in a library or bundle service other than public libraries.
  • The book is public domain. KDP says public domain content cannot enroll.

Our own sample work falls under that last rule. Our sample EPUB, built on 10 October 2026, is a chapter of Pride and Prejudice. As a KDP title it would be shut out of Select, and of pre-orders as well.

The fix we do for this: KDP listing prep writes your description, 7 keywords, 3 categories and title fields as text ready to paste, so the ebook goes into Kindle Unlimited with a page that sells it. It costs $99 and takes 2 business days, and we never log in. Ask us about your listing.

How are Kindle Unlimited pages paid?

By share of pages read. KDP works out each author's part of the monthly fund from their share of all pages read that month, counted in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages.

KDP's own worked example: with a $10 million fund and 100 million pages read, a 100 page ebook read in full 100 times earns $1,000. A 200 page ebook read halfway, 100 times, earns the same $1,000. Pages are only paid the first time a customer reads them, up to 3,000 normalized pages per customer per title.

That example uses round numbers. The real fund and page rate change each month.

How do I leave KDP Select?

Untick automatic renewal before the term ends. KDP renews every enrolled ebook for another 90 days unless you opt out. Unticking does not end the current term.

You can cancel outright only within three days of the term starting. After that, KDP says to contact them. When enrollment ends, unused free days and Countdown Deals go away.

If your ebook is on pre-order, the term starts on release day. Our post on KDP pre-order setup and deadlines covers that timing, and our guide to formatting an ebook for Kindle covers the file itself.
