Can you launch the ebook and paperback together on KDP?

Our Great Gatsby sample paperback open beside the same chapter on an e-reader.

Short answer. Yes. To launch ebook and paperback together on KDP, put the ebook on pre-order and schedule a release date for the paperback, both on the same day. The two tools have different deadlines. The paperback locks five days before launch, the ebook three. The two pages can take up to a week to link.

Key points

  • Only the ebook can go on pre-order. KDP does not offer pre-orders for paperbacks or hardcovers.
  • A paperback can get a scheduled release date up to 90 days ahead. Its Amazon page stays hidden until that day.
  • Paperback files lock five days before the release date. Ebook pre-order files are due 72 hours before.
  • KDP says formats link 48 hours to 1 week after each one is live.
  • If the paperback proof has not arrived yet, launch the ebook first.

How do I launch the ebook and paperback on the same day?

Use the tool KDP gives each format. The ebook goes on pre-order with your launch date as its release date. The paperback gets a scheduled release date set to the same day.

Both are set up in your KDP Bookshelf. Our post on how KDP pre-orders work covers the ebook side in full. This post is about making the two formats meet.

Lining up those dates is part of what our book launch plan does, along with the posts and emails for each day.

Can I put a paperback on pre-order?

No. KDP's Schedule a Release page says KDP does not offer pre-orders for print books, meaning paperbacks and hardcovers.

What it offers instead is a release date. Readers cannot buy the paperback early, and its Amazon page is hidden until the date you set. KDP's page adds a warning: if you run a print pre-order through another service, do not use KDP's release date option, because it hides your detail page.

Only new KDP print books can use it. A paperback that is already live cannot be given a release date.

What are the deadlines for each format?

They differ, and the earlier one is the paperback.

From KDP's Schedule a Release page:

  • The release date can be up to 90 days ahead.
  • You upload the manuscript to schedule the release.
  • Within five days of release, you cannot change the files or book details, unpublish, or move the date.
  • KDP's customer service cannot make changes after that deadline either.

From KDP's Timelines page, for an ebook on pre-order:

  • You can upload the final manuscript up to 72 hours before the release date.
  • Titles are usually reviewed and published within 24 to 72 hours.
  • The manuscript and book details cannot be updated within 72 hours of release.

What does that look like for a real launch date?

We dated it for a launch on Tuesday 1 December 2026. We checked every date below in Python's calendar on 14 October 2026.

Step Rule Date
First day you can schedule the paperback for 1 Dec Up to 90 days ahead Wed 2 Sep 2026
Paperback files and details lock 5 days before release Thu 26 Nov 2026
Ebook pre-order final file due 72 hours before release Sat 28 Nov 2026

Latest the pages should link 1 week after each is live about Tue 8 Dec 2026

The paperback lock lands on US Thanksgiving, two days before the ebook's. When we laid this out, that surprised us more than anything else in the table. If the cover or interior needs one more fix, it has to be done before the holiday, not on the weekend.

The last row is our count from KDP's "up to 1 week" figure. Check your own detail page on day 2 and day 7.

The fix we do for this: we write your launch plan in six parts, dated day by day around your launch, with both formats' KDP deadlines, the proof date and the posts that go with them, for $249 in 7 business days. You run it; we promise no sales. Tell us your launch date.

Why are my ebook and paperback on separate pages on launch day?

Because linking happens after both are live. KDP's Timelines page gives 48 hours to 1 week after each edition is live for the ebook and print editions to link.

KDP's page on linking books says Amazon matches formats when your book details match. If they still have not joined after a week, check that the details are the same on both, then contact KDP.

For launch day, this changes one thing in your posts. Link to the format you most want people to buy, not to whichever page you found first. Our judgement: for most first novels, that is the ebook page, because the pre-order buyers are already there.

How long does the paperback take to appear if I just publish it?

If you skip the release date and publish the paperback directly, KDP's Timelines page gives up to 72 hours for the Amazon.com page. Other stores take up to 5 days, and Amazon.ca can take up to 30.

New accounts wait longer. KDP's page says publishing a paperback may take up to 6 days for an account without a previously published book.

That is why "publish the paperback the night before" is risky for a first book. A scheduled release date removes the guesswork, as long as you meet the five-day lock.

Should I launch the ebook and paperback together at all?

Our judgement: yes, if the paperback proof is in your hands and you are happy with it. One launch day means one set of posts, one email and one page to point readers to after linking.

Launch the ebook first if the proof has not arrived. KDP's ordering page says you request up to 5 proof copies from a draft after approving it in the Print Previewer. The email to finish the order comes within 4 hours, and you have 24 hours to check out. Delivery time depends on the date checkout shows you.

A paperback launched without a proof can carry faults you only see in print: a cover that sits off the spine, or margins too tight to read. Adding the paperback two weeks later gives you a second reason to post. Our guide to uploading a paperback to KDP walks through the setup.

Can I order author copies before the paperback release date?

Yes, within limits. KDP's Schedule a Release page says you can order author copies while the detail page is hidden, a day after the status changes to Release Scheduled. Ordering closes in the last five days before release.

For the 1 December example, that means ordering before 26 November.
