Short answer. The KDP review process usually takes up to 72 hours. KDP says ebooks are typically reviewed and published within 24 to 72 hours, and print books within 72 hours. Low-content books such as journals can take 3 to 4 weeks. Support cannot speed it up, so check the file before you press Publish.
Key points
- Ebooks: typically 24 to 72 hours from submission to live.
- Paperbacks and hardcovers: up to 72 hours.
- Low-content books: 3 to 4 weeks, which KDP puts down to high publishing volumes.
- KDP's general estimate is 3 business days for a book or an update to go live.
- KDP says contacting Customer Support "will not expedite the review process".
- If review ends in a rejection email, our KDP rejected file fix starts with a free diagnosis.
How long does the KDP review process take?
For most books, up to 72 hours. KDP's Timelines page gives these estimates:
- Ebook: "typically reviewed and published within 24 to 72 hours".
- Paperback or hardcover: "Up to 72 hours".
- Low-content book: "3-4 weeks".
The same page also gives a general figure of 3 business days for a book or an update to go live. It adds that technical delays can shift the time by a few minutes to several hours. So 72 hours is the normal case, not a promise.
What does "In review" mean on my bookshelf?
It means KDP has your files and is checking them before the book goes on sale. While a book is in review you cannot edit it.
For paperbacks, KDP lets you change the title, subtitle or author name within 72 hours of first publication, but only once the book is no longer in review. Plan your edits for after review, not during it.
Why is my KDP review taking longer than 72 hours?
The Timelines page names two causes: the book type and the marketplace. Low-content books are the clearest case, at 3 to 4 weeks.
KDP's Content Guidelines add a third. KDP "may also request additional information relating to your book before it's available for sale". Public domain books are one example, since KDP can ask for proof that a text is public domain. Answer that email fast, because the book waits until you do.
Does contacting KDP support speed up review?
No. KDP's own words: "reaching out to Customer Support will not expedite the review process." Write to support if you get an email asking for something, or if your book has been in review well past the estimates. Do not write just to ask for speed.
What happens after review?
One of two things. The book goes live, or you get an email saying what needs to change.
If it goes live, the work is not quite done. KDP says an ebook can take up to 72 hours after going live to show in search results. A paperback detail page can take up to 72 hours on Amazon.com and up to 5 days in other marketplaces.
If you get a rejection, the email names the problem. Our post on why KDP keeps rejecting your book covers the formatting causes, and Amazon KDP manuscript upload errors covers the ones that stop a file at upload.
The fix we do for this: send us the rejection email and your file. We tell you by email, within 1 business day of having the file, what failed and what the fix costs. Tell us what KDP said.
How long do changes to a live book take?
Changes go through review too. KDP's Timelines page lists:
- Title, description, keywords or author name on an ebook: 72 hours.
- Categories on an ebook: 72 hours, with sales rank taking up to a week to catch up.
- List price: 24 hours for an ebook, 72 hours to 5 business days for a paperback.
- A new manuscript: 72 hours for an ebook, up to 72 hours for a paperback.
KDP's pricing page notes one exception. If you only change the list price and publish, the book's content does not go into review.
How do I get through review the first time?
Check the file before you submit, because a rejection restarts the clock. For an ebook, page through it in Kindle Previewer. For print, check page size, margins and fonts against KDP's print specs.
That is the check we run on our own work. On 14 October 2026 we ran it on our Great Gatsby sample book. The page box matched the 6 x 9 inch trim box and every font was embedded. It also showed 14 pages, 10 short of KDP's 24 page paperback minimum, the kind of problem to catch before you press Publish. We have not submitted that book to KDP. Our post on using Kindle Previewer shows the ebook side.
What else do authors ask about the KDP review process?
Up to 72 hours for most books. Ebooks are typically 24 to 72 hours. Low-content books can take 3 to 4 weeks.
No. Wait until review ends, then make the change, which goes through review again.
No. KDP says contacting support will not speed up the review process.
KDP says an ebook can take up to 72 hours after going live to appear in search results.
Not if the price is the only thing you change. KDP says the content does not go into review then.
What should you do next?
Give review the full 72 hours before you worry, and keep your launch date at least that far out. If the email that comes back is a rejection, send it to us with the file, and the KDP rejected file fix starts with a free diagnosis.
